All Ireland Champions visit the school

On Friday 1st April two members of the victorious Meath ladies football team visited the school. The children were really excited to meet two All-Ireland champions and were delighted to get their autographs and a picture taken with the cup.

Lá Fichille - Official Chess Tournament - Wednesday 9th March

Lá Fichille is being celebrated on the 9th March this year where the children will get the chance to compete against over 30 schools from around the country. It should be a very enjoyable day and I know the children are looking forward to it. Best of luck to all.

Here is the link to the in school tournament starting at 13:30.

Online Chess Tournament Warm Up -Wednesday 23rd February

The children will be playing an online tournament against other schools on March 9th to celebrate Lá Fichille.
To prepare for this competition the organisers have arranged a practice tournament for children to get used to the online format.
There are two tournaments for the children on Wednesday the 23rd February if they would like to get some practice in.
The first one is on at 13:30 until 14:25 and you can join from the link below. Just scroll down and click on the green button that says JOIN.

The second takes place at 18:05 until 19:00 and can be joined from the link below also.

Once you are in the arena your game should automatically start when the tournament begins. It may take a few seconds so don't worry if you don't go into a game straight away. When your game is over make sure to click on "Go back to tournament" so you can be paired with a new opponent. It doesn't seem to work on I-pads so make sure to use a laptop or Android device.

There is still time for children to sign up to the O Growney NS Chess club also if they would like to. Just follow the instructions below.

Chess Club Online

I am delighted to offer the children in the class the opportunity to join the O' Growney NS Chess club on Lichess.org (The lichess.org platform has a safe Kid Mode feature which disables all chat functions). Once the children are part of the club they will be able to play online tournaments against each other which I can organise. The tournaments will only be between the members of the school chess club. There may also be the opportunity to play tournaments against other schools although that has yet to be arranged.

To join the club follow these steps.
Step 1 - Register an account on Lichess.org and enable Kid Mode. The video below will show you how to do that.

Step 2 - Click on the link below to join the O' Growney NS Chess Club and click "Join Team". I will have to confirm by hitting accept and then the children will become a member.

On the 1st of February we celebrated St Brigid's Day. To mark the occasion we made our very own St Brigid's Crosses.
