Welcome To Fifth Class

Hello everybody, 3rd May
Starting today, your parents will be able to see the timetable of work I suggest for this week on the Aladdin app. For that reason I'll no longer be putting work here also. Using Aladdin, you & your parents can return any work that you'd like me to see. However, please feel free to continue to use the email address msmulholland5th@gmail.com to contact me, just to say hello! Thank you for the lovely emails so far, it's been lovely to catch up with you.
I hope you are all well & enjoying the sunshine :)

Hi everyone, 26th April I hope you're getting used to the new 'normal'. I'm slowly getting used to it but I miss you all!
I'm going to give you a few ideas on how you could try to include a bit of 'school' in your day. I'll put up a few ideas for each day. I know you all have different situations at home. Some of you have your own laptop/tablet/phone, some of you may not have wifi and need to borrow your parents' phones to log on here. Whatever your situation, do what you can, there is NO pressure on you or your parents to get everything done that I suggest. I also know that some of you may be helping out a lot at home, with younger brothers & sisters and with housework, cooking and cleaning. You know what you're able for, just do what you can. I've set up a new e-mail address, msmulholland5th@gmail.com which you can use to let me know how you're getting on or to send me pictures of any projects you've completed. (Again, no pressure).
Take care of yourselves & stay safe!

March 2020
I hope everyone is ok. I'll try to check in here every so often and post links to any sites I think might interest you. Here's the first one I told you about already - the one I said is like Netflix for books! Follow these instructions to log in and access hundreds of books. Not school books - but books I know most of you are reading anyway. You don't have to download them, just read them online. I've added everyone's name so just find your own name, click on it and you'll be able to keep track of what you've read & where you stopped reading. You can only log on & read for free during school hours though, otherwise you have to pay!

Starting on RTÉ2 from Monday 30 March, teachers on the RTÉ Home School Hub will present three short class segments aimed at 1st and 2nd class, 3rd and 4th class and 5th and 6th class. Classes will start each morning from 11am to 12pm, so plenty of time to get a solid breakfast in and maybe a quick walk.
Classes will start on television, for an hour, before directing the kids to fun content and projects on rte.ie/learn and the RTÉ Player.
And then the kids takeover, as RTÉ Home School Extra kicks off at 4.15pm where kids from all over the country can reconnect by uploading and posting video messages and content.
And it couldn't be easier to add into your day: On RTÉ2/RTÉ Player/rte.ie/learn, children will be able to watch/download and engage with curriculum-based content, project work and fun activities that will keep them entertained and learning.
All content will be presented by qualified primary school teachers, modelled and curated around the existing primary school curriculum, so you can bring the best bits of school home each day!

Norman Castles
We learned all about The Normans in history and we studied some of the Norman castles which can still be seen around Ireland. We then designed and built our own Norman castles in art. It took a lot longer than we'd predicted but it was very satisfying to see the finished product!
Someone Like Me.
This competition aims to raise disability awareness among primary school children and give them a greater understanding of what unites children of differing abilities. Someone Like Me allows children to learn about and discuss these topics and creatively express what they’ve learned through art.
We decided that a jigsaw was a good metaphor to show that we are each an important piece of our class picture. Even though we are all different and have various talents and abilities, we also have varying needs and difficulties. However, when we help and understand each other, we come together to assemble our jigsaw.

Away in a Spaceship!
We performed our Christmas play during the week of the holidays. The play is about three aliens who are sent to Earth to investigate what Christmas is and to learn its true meaning. We began to learn our lines in early November. Every member of the class was involved in some way. We had our actors, costume department and a very hard working set department who designed, drew and painted our props and background. We had intended to perform our play for parents and family members, but unfortunately, our class, like the rest of the school, was struck down with illness for a large part of December. This made rehearsals very difficult as most of the cast were absent! The week before we were due to perform for parents, we made the difficult decision to cancel the performance. This was incredibly disappointing for everyone as we had spent so much time preparing and worked so hard on it. We did record the play and it is on YouTube for parents to see. Here are some photos of us performing the play for other classes in the school.
